Some people believe in creationism.
Others believe in evolution.
I believe in both. Sort of.
If you ask my 3-year-old how to make cookies, she will tell you this (complete with hand motions):
“First, you mix the batter, then put it in the panner, put it in the oven, and then take it out. And you have cookies!”
My slightly older kids remember that there is some sugar and other ingredients involved in the process. And my oldest can even tell you what aisle to find the ingredients at the store. But none of them could, without a recipe, successfully make cookies.
I think that’s what has happened with the creation story.
The Creationism Side
In the Bible, the story goes something like this:
“And God said ‘let there be [fill in the blank]’ and there was. And it was good.”
That’s a lot like my 3-year-old’s description of making cookies. She has no concept of how long it takes to make cookies or even really what goes in them, just that Mom has the magical power to create yummy cookies.
The Evolution Side
As a society, we’ve figured out a little bit more about what it might take to create an earth. We know how impossible it would have been for God to create something from nothing (i.e. ex nihilo). And also that he couldn’t just mix some stuff together and voila we have an earth in 6 days or less!
But the story told by those who believe in evolution sounds kind of like saying, "The batter walked into the oven and eventually came out yummy cookies!"
Science disproves Creationism. Doesn't it?
As we get more advanced in the future, we may learn more about the ingredients God used to create this earth, and where they came from. We may even discover the impossibility of the earth creating itself.
But we still don’t know how God did it. And we also don't know that God didn't do it.
No, neither side disproves the other.
I can agree, at least somewhat, with both camps. Yes, God created this earth. And, yes, it is likely that it took millions of years for the earth to evolve into what we know and love today.
But why not believe that God is the Great Scientist who understood laws of nature better than any of us can possibly imagine, and that he used that knowledge to create this earth for us?
Just like I use my "vast knowledge" to create cookies for my kids.
Where do you stand on the Creationism vs. Evolution debate? Let me know in the comments!
And also, go make cookies!
I write about, with, for, and around kids all day. (Well, maybe I do the dishes too. Sometimes.)
