Both of these words basically mean “WOW!”
So what's the diff?
Connotation is the spin a word puts on a sentence. For example,
It all boils down to connotation.
Um, Excuse me...
Oh, hi! Folks, this is my imaginary blog friend who sometimes interrupts me while blogging.
Hi, how are you, nice to meet you, nice to see you again. But JEN, what you said about 'unbelievable' having a negative connotation? Not entirely true.
What do you mean?
Well, Merriam-Webster, for starters, defines the word as being “used to describe something that is so good, bad, etc., that it is difficult to believe”
My point is, sometimes 'unbelievable' is used to mean something positive and sometimes it means something negative.
Hmm, yes. Language evolution then? Like the word 'awful'?
Could be. Wouldn't be the first time.
Good point, good point. Well, I think this post is a long enough. I'll just-
Ahem. Readers listening in, remember? Don't you think we should explain what happened to the word 'awful'?
Oh, yes, of course! So, 'Awful' comes from the root for 'awe' and the root for 'full' as in 'full of awe'. So, it used to mean something that made you full of awe – i.e. good connotation. Then people began using the word ironically, until eventually it was something so bad it was unbelievable.
Hee hee, I see what you did there. But stay focused, JEN, stay focused.
Since awful now meant something bad, we still needed a word to describe things that fill us with awe – like God, and Nature, etc. So the word, 'awesome' was born – er – coined.
Awesome job, JEN
Aw, thanks! What would I do without you?
I've been asking that for years. Also, was that a tongue twister loose back on your 'A' post?
Oh, my, I think it's time to end this post! Have a great day, Folks!
How could you be so careless-
Um, can we take this conversation out of blogging ear-shot?
Ah- heh – Bye, Readers! Nice meeting you! Hope to see you again! Hope you'll leave a comment!
