Look at your toes. That's Nadir. Astronomically speaking, it's the point in space directly opposite to where you are standing.
Figuratively speaking, it's the lowest point in a life or situation.
In books, the nadir is the "darkest moment". It's the point in the book where everything looks gloomiest and nothing could get any worse. Often this is essential because it causes the character do something spectacular.
It causes him (or her) to look up.
