Hey, Happy 4th!
And if you don’t celebrate the US Independence Day, well then, Happy 4th anyway!
Now, I really need this blog hop because I’m in a particularly insecure position writing-wise, that I call...
THE HOME STRETCH
Imagine you’re running, actually running in a race. Off in the distance is the dot which you know to be the finish line. But, man, you’ve been running a long time (think: marathon not sprint races) and no matter how much you pump your feet, that dot of a finish line doesn’t seem to be getting any bigger.
You know you’ve got the skills. You’ve been working toward this moment for years.
You have friends rooting for you – “come on, you can do it!”
But now that the end is in sight, that stubborn dot that refuses to grow.
Thoughts creep in:
What were you thinking?
How dare you think you could win this thing?
What you’ve got isn’t so great.
And with that your legs start to give out.
You’re in danger of losing hope. And you’re not even that far from the finish line.
Hey IWSG is about writing, remember?
Hang in there, I’m coming to that.
OK, I’ve got this picture book.
I love it.
My kids love it. (though I’d NEVER mention it in my query)
My critique group loves it. (Won’t mention this either)
And I promised myself I’d send it out.
But when it came right down to the home stretch - the finish line a dot in the distance - I began to falter.
Is it really as polished as I hope?
Some of my critique group are making awesome tear-it-apart-and-build-it-again suggestions. Do I stick to what I’ve got and send anyway?
Here I am bending a few rules with this manuscript… am I clever? Or insane?
But here’s the thing: I’ve got to push past that. And you do, too.
If you or I never send it out – we’ve got a 100% chance of a “no”.
whenever those thoughts creep in. Whenever that dot out there looks too small to distinguish as the finish, just
Go for it.
Because you’ll never be a winner… if you never hit the finish line.
Am I the only writer who sometimes feels this way? Let me know in the comments
By the way, what's IWSG?
So glad you asked!
It's an awesome group of writers who blog about their insecurities (as writers - don't get too personal) and then we support each other by visiting blogs, leaving encouraging comments. This month, most bloggers posted yesterday (July 3rd) because of the US legal holiday, but I couldn't resist saying Happy 4th, so I waited until the actual day. Want to join the group? The Button below will zoom you there!
I write about, with, for, and around kids all day. (Well, maybe I do the dishes too. Sometimes.)
